Ever since the George Floyd protests back in the summer of 2020, many United States cities have moved to defund their police departments in some capacity, like Los Angeles or New York City to name a few. This was done because the mass protests and rioters who took part in vandalizing American cities wanted to have their police departments defunded in memory of George Floyd. Despite this being a heavily disagreeable idea, political officials gave the rioters what they wanted anyway. In the City of Los Angeles, the Police department was defunded by 150 million dollars before the end of 2020. In the City of New York, the Police department was defunded by roughly 1 billion dollars. This very same trend continued into many other cities across the nation as well, in the hopes that the people would get more “freedom” from what they believed to be oppression by law enforcement officers. Unfortunately, what many of those violent rioters and protestors do not realize is that the police exist to ensure their safety. Without them, widespread crime and corruption can go undeterred because of no consequence. Unsurprisingly, this is exactly what happened.
During the George Floyd protests of 2020, hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage was reported and thousands of American lives were uprooted because of the chaos. In short, the looters were responsible for the massive increase in crime back in the summer of 2020. Because of this reduction in law enforcement, the crime rate only increased. According to the New York City Police Department,
“For the month of April 2021, overall index crime in New York City rose 30.4% compared with April 2020, driven by a 66% increase in grand larceny (2,659 v. 1,601) and a 35.6% increase in felony assault (1,630 v. 1,202). Robbery saw a 28.6% increase compared to April 2020 (885 v. 688), and shooting incidents increased to 149 v. 56 in April 2020 (+166.1%). Burglary was the only index crime to post a reduction – down 26% (855 v. 1,155) in April 2021, compared to the previous year.”New York City Police Department Official Website, May 5th, 2021
Emphasis in the original. The American victims who were caught up in this violence didn’t deserve to suffer. The lunacy of appealing to the rage mob across America has resulted in an increase in overall crime by a disturbing 30.4% in New York City from April 2020 into April 2021. Most recently, approximately seven shootings occurred within days of each other in the beginning of May of 2021. The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, had the audacity to blame these events on Covid-19, rather than through his own actions a year earlier with his defunding of the police department. This lack of consideration for the citizens he leads reflects poorly on his ability to lead his city and the political system of the United States for allowing him to get away with such careless policy. Incredibly, this same action of defunding the city police was seen in cities like Baltimore and Atlanta as well as others on the west coast.
The action of removing those given permission by the public to protect them from danger is a careless one that doesn’t consider the individual American. In fact, it’s selfish! This action is clearly wrong to it’s core! In order to see why this is, it’s important look at just how much crime one hypothetical officer is capable of stopping yearly to see how much they give back to the community on average. One study found that just one police officer introduced to a new city each year was, on average, worth the prevention of 4 violent crimes and 15 property crimes. This impact resulted in those officers giving their cities back more than 300,000 dollars annually from not letting those crimes occur. In areas that were affected heavily by the Great Recession of 2007, the Officers impact on crime was even greater than the figures that were previously stated. This value is highly significant, because each crime is a life saved or preserved just from adding ONE individual to a law enforcement agency!
Based on the above, it’s no wonder that cities across America are backpedaling on defunding the police in favor of re-funding them. New York is currently building a new police precinct that will be heavily utilized for 92 million dollars and Baltimore, Delaware received 27 million more dollars for their police departments in the year of 2021. According to The Wall Street Journal,
“In the nation’s 20 largest local law-enforcement agencies, city and county leaders want funding increases for nine of the 12 departments where next year’s budgets have already been proposed. The increases range from 1% to nearly 6%.”The Wall Street Journal, May 26th, 2021
Law Enforcement exists to protect and serve the people. If political leaders take away their ability to perform their duty, then naturally more crime is going to occur. The badge exists to maintain law and order. The good men and women who honor it should not be disgraced by a decision made in weakness to gain political favor. By appealing to anarchy, the leaders of those cities forsake the people they were sworn to lead and create a monumental disservice to their city’s finest. Those are the men and women who stand proud protecting their fellow Americans from dangers that they may face in their every day lives. They are our finest, and they deserve nothing but the best from our leaders, and our citizens!
